Orchestra Victoria: Mostly Mozart

  • Melbourne Recital Centre 31 Sturt Street Southbank, VIC, 3006 Australia (map)

Join this Grand Tour through Europe with three of the greatest composers. Beethoven’s gruff and dramatic overture to Goethe’s Egmont, is a concentrated expression of the Dutch hero’s triumph sacrifice in the name of liberty and freedom from the Spanish. Mozart’s youthful Piano Concerto No.12, K.414 is a miracle of the Austrian genius’ maturity beyond his years. Although premiered in London in 1833, Mendelssohn’s Italian symphony was first conceived during a tour the young composer took through the major capitals cities of Italy. He wrote to his sister that ‘it will be the happiest piece I have ever written, especially the last movement’ and certainly a feeling of joyous energy dominates the symphony, which throbs with Italian dance rhythms, from the Roman saltarello to the frenzied Neapolitan tarantella.
